Lucifer S1:E10 Pops recap starts now!

Spoilers ahead Lucifans!

We start out with INXS’s Devil Inside, an inspired choice, playing over Lucifer seducing a grocery store worker over a strawberry. She bites, and lets out an “Oh God.” Lucifer groans, disappointed that she had to bring Him into it, just ruined the moment. Chloe asks what the hell he is doing, and we see that they are actually at a crime scene in a grocery store. A man has dropped dead in the store, seemingly poisoned, and it’s Chef Javier Arias. Lucifer is devastated that the maker of his favourite Mexican cuisine has kicked the bucket. He had breakfast every morning at his own restaurant, so all the staff are suspects, especially as he had a reputation for being a difficult boss.

tamale

Lucifer is very concerned that Javier never had the chance to write his recipes down, and hopes at the very least there are some leftovers from the previous night at his restaurant. They head over to interview the staff, and find out they all called him Pops, they were like a family and saw him as a father figure. Lucifer gets excited, it’s patricide! His favourite kind of murder! Chloe tells him to not let his daddy issues cloud his judgement.

An officer interrupts to tell Chloe that her sister is here, and she begins to tell him she doesn’t have a sister until she realises who it is. It’s her mum, and her mum just happens to be Rebecca de Mornay! She asks Chloe who the handsome devil is, and Lucifer is starstruck. It’s Penelope Decker, the famous B grade actress!

vampire

Penelope has become tired of the convention circuit, and decided to drop in for a visit on her way home. She knows Javier and when she heard, she had to come by. Chloe convinces her to go, but not before she can invite Lucifer to a family dinner that she’s decided they’re all having that evening.  She leaves and they start to interview the staff.

crime

They all describe him as fiery and difficult to work for, but they all insist he was like a father to them much to Lucifer’s disgust. They interview Javier’s actual son, Javier Jr, who no longer works at the restaurant but arrived in town the night before. They had a strained relationship, the only thing that made Pops happy was the restaurant. Javier Jr. could never live up to the expectations, and hit the road, in search of something different. Ringing any bells Lucifer?

He tries his Jedi desire trick, and asks Javier if there was anything in particular he desired to do to his father when he returned? Javier Jnr tells him he just wanted to have one more meal with his dad, that’s all. They shared breakfast, and then went their separate ways, not before Pops asked him to meet that night as he had something to tell him. Chloe asks if he inherits the restaurant, but Javier Jnr doubts it. Lucifer just can’t believe the luck of the guy, getting back just before his dad popped his clogs.

lucky

Maze goes to see therapist Linda, but Linda is not sure it’s appropriate. Maze likes her, and thinks she might be able to help her, after all she helped Lucifer. Maze isn’t happy, she stuck in a place that she doesn’t belong, and needs Linda to tell her what to do. Linda tells her it’s not how it works, and Maze asks whether she has to sleep with her first? Linda politely declines, and tells her too engage with the people around her, in order top feel more connected to her environment. Make some friends, have some caring, rewarding relationships. Mazekeen is not having any of that, and is out.

sex

Malcolm is still feeding his face, and Dan asks what the gun he got is for. Malcolm won;t tell him, and Dan threatens to tell all. Malcolm tells him to chill, and that if he was Dan he’d be concerned about someone like Lucifer spending so much time with his wife, especially considering he’s so dangerous. Dan twigs that he’s meaning to kill Lucifer and asks why? Malcolm tells him that he wouldn’t believe him if he told him, and if he decides to tell all or get rid of him, he’d better not miss this time.

Chloe speaks to  one of Javier’s chefs, Ann, the one who happened to have cooked his breakfast. She is also the one due to inherit the restaurant, having been Pops apprentice. She tells them that any number of staff could have had their hands on that plate, and she would never kill him. He was he mentor, and yes, like a father to her. Can’t you almost hear Lucifer rolling his eyes? He asks her what she desires, and she tells him she wanted to be better than Pops, to surpass him. Chloe gets the heads up that the poison was mercury, laced with heroin. Lucifer tells Ann she was a generous killer wanting him to go out on a high, as she starts to get stomach pains and coughs up blood all over his snowy white shirt.

effect

Lucifer dons a cheery green Javier’s t shirt, and asks how it is that Ann has survived so far, did the killer run out of thermometers? Lucifer is still suspecting Javier Jnr, but Chloe tells him he’s just acting like a guy who lost his father and she doesn’t suspect him. Dan arrives and with a file. He’s tracked down a former employee, Naomi, who also happens to be a heroin addict. She also showed up recently and yelled at Pops and Ann. Lucifer makes a few digs, and Dan says to him “You don;t care who you piss off, do you?” To which Lucifer replies, “Not in the slightest, no!” Chloe invites Dan along to the family dinner to act as a bit of a buffer, and he agrees. Lucifer asks if they can stop on the way to interview Naomi, the shirt is a bit of a loaner really.

douche

Lucifer lets himself in, and Chloe tells him they need a warrant. Naomi’s flat is overrun with drug paraphernalia, and also a backpack belonging to Javier Jnr, who must be staying there. Chloe agrees to a very quick illegal search and they have a look around. They begin to overhear some sexy times going on next door, and once again Lucifer is disgusted to hear someone else calling out to his Father. Dear old Dad strikes again.

spoiling

Chloe thinks it’s a bit funny, and Lucifer can see why she wouldn’t understand; her mother is delightful. That’s what he thinks, she tells him, and Lucifer’s eyes light up at the thought of some angst. She tells him that her mother is like a child, everything is about her, and that her whole childhood was being dragged around auditions. Chloe notices a picture askew, and finds drugs taped behind the picture. Naomi arrives, and they start to question her, about the fight with Pops and Jr staying with her. She tells them that she just wanted Pops to like her, and accept that her and Jnr were together. She also wasn’t at breakfast, she was seeing her sponsor, trying to get clean. Jnr however, told her he wanted a chance to confront his father alone, he wanted to make it right and settle things.

Chloe gets an emergency call on her phone and screams off, leaving Lucifer at Naomi’s. She races home, only to find her mother and Trixie all dolled up. Penelope told the babysitter to go and has Trixie all ready for her first audition, one Chloe did not give permission for. Chloe tells her she can’t just walk on in here – “Like I own the place? The place you’re living in rent free?” says Penelope. Chloe tells her she has no right to take her, and looks around for Trixie, but she’s gone. They can’t find her. and Chloe has called everyone she knows. She gets an alert on her phone. Trixie has ordered a ride on her Uber account!

here

At Lux, Trixie heads for the bar and asks for Lucifer. “Who are you supposed to be?” asks Maze. She says she’s his friend, and Maze replies that his friends get worse and worse, and pours her a whiskey. Trixie tells her that she hates it when people fight over her. It’s usually her mum and dad, but this time it’s her mum and grandma fighting over what she should do when she grows up. Maze totally gets where she’s coming from, and clinks drinks with her. Chloe arrives, and asks what she was thinking. Trixie tells her she wanted to see Lucifer, but made a new friend instead.

Lucifer waits for Jnr at Naomi’s apartment, and asks him what it’s like now that he’s killed his father. Does the air feel fresher, the sun seem brighter? He tells him he didn’t kill his father and he’s just come back to get something. Lucifer tells him that the heroin is gone, and Jr tells him it wasn’t heroin he came for, and pulls a knife. Lucifer tells him he doesn’t know who he is playing with, but Jr wasn’t threatening him with it; his father gave him that knife. Lucifer realises he didn’t kill him after all, and he is genuinely distraught over his father’s death, much to his annoyance.

At Chloe’s, Dan arrives for dinner, and Penelope greets him warmly. Dan asks what smells so good, and she tells him that Lucifer has provided the meal. Lucifer and his new friend Javier Jnr in fact. Trixie is so excited to see Lucifer and runs to greet him.

back

Lucifer convinces Chloe that having Jnr here is a good thing, she can find out some more about him and query him some more about the murder. Chloe tells them not to eat any of the delicious food Jnr has prepared, thinking it could be poisoned. Lucifer gives Jnr the opportunity to explain himself, but Chloe won’t believe him without proof. Lucifer tells her that she said herself that she might want to kill her mother, but she never would really. Penelope can’t believe Chloe would say that just because she put makeup on Trixie, but Lucifer tells her it’s because she thinks she’s a child and forced her to grow up to quickly. Stunned faces all round.

Dan leaps to her defense, and Lucifer comments that they seem closer than before, maybe they really will get back together. Chloe insists it was just one kiss, and Lucifer replies “So you’re kissing now? Right! Maybe that explains why you won’t have sex with me!” Stunned faces again. Penelope congratulates her on having two men, and Chloe insists she is not juggling anything. They start to argue, but stop when they hear Jnr sobbing, but it’s happy-ish tears, he and his dad used to fight like that. He couldn’t get far enough away from him, and saw him every time he looked in the mirror, but he’s okay with that now. He’s a part of him, and in the end he made him the man he is and he’s proud of himself. He came home to tell him he was clean, and wanted to be a chef again. Chloe believes him and tells him he’ll still have to make a statement, and Dan is more than happy to get out of there and take him to the station. As he leaves he says to Lucifer, “I wanted one reason to stick up for you, just one.”

right

Lucifer is totally not worried about having ruined dinner, but more about how Javier’s story doesn’t help him at all. He didn’t escape his father because he turned into him, and that doesn’t apply to Lucifer at all. Chloe is disgusted, and leaves the table too. Lucifer cleans up and goes to leave, and Chloe tells him he was right, Jnr didn’t kill him. She’s heard from the lab and the heroin doesn’t match. She still suspects the sous chef Ann, maybe she gave herself enough to make her sick but not kill herself. But what is her motive? The restaurant is hers already, maybe Pops had a change of heart after Jnr returned home. Chloe calls the hospital to check on Ann, but she’s checked herself out an hour before.

Lucifer and Chloe bust her at the restaurant, trying to destroy some heroin she had hidden in the kitchen. Ann is very upset about Pops, and Chloe works out that the poison wasn’t meant for Pops, it was meant for Jnr. She used the heroin so she could pass his death off as a bad fix, not aware that he had become a vegetarian while he was away getting healthy. Ann tells them how ungrateful Jnr was, how he was always the favourite. Lucifer tells him that he deserved it, and he had a chance at redemption until she ruined it. Ann lashes out, and spills hot oil, ignites it, and runs.

shot

Lucifer and Chloe are trapped with no way out, and she asks him if has any ideas, now would be a good time to try them out. Lucifer carries Chloe out to safety, burning his arm on the way. “The Devil gets burned by a fire, could this be any more ironic?” Chloe has a laugh to herself, and Lucifer is pleased she finds him so amusing. She shows him the baggie of heroin she’s managed to salvage from the fire, it should be enough to prove their case against Ann who has been caught a few blocks away. Javier Jnr arrives and is devastated by the loss of the restaurant, and Chloe tells him that Pops was going to leave it to him all along. Jnr makes plans to rebuild it and make it his own.

Maze goes back to see Linda, and tells her that she made a friend today, an eight year old girl who wandered in to the bar. Linda tells her it’s a start and perhaps the next one could be of legal drinking age. Maze agrees.

busy

Chloe goes home and has a drink with her mum, who has waited up to talk to her as she has an early flight the next morning. Penelope apologises for not being the easiest mum to put up with, and that Chloe felt she always had to be the adult. She just wants her to be happy, and take a leap once in a while.

Dan meets with Malcolm, and tells him he agrees about Lucifer, “He’s insane and dangerous. And he deserves everything he gets.” Malcolm is pleased to hear it, but Dan draws his gun and offers Malcolm his handcuffs. Dan has decided that he’ll go down with Malcolm, and he’ll tell the truth. They fight, and Malcolm gets the better of Dan, and chokes him out with his handcuffs. As Dan falls unconscious he gets a text from Chloe telling him she wants to try again, and Malcolm assures the out of it Dan that he’ll answer for him.

Lucifer is back at his apartment, and a very drunk Chloe arrives. Lucifer asks what has happened, maybe something with Dan? She tells him that Dan has ended it with her over a text, like they’re in high school. Lucifer says “We’re certainly drinking like we are!” Lucifer sits her down and she asks him why she would do that to herself, let herself care for him again, and open herself up to getting hurt? Lucifer replies that it’s because she’s a kind person who puts to needs of others before her own.

irony

Chloe says that Lucifer doesn’t do that, he just takes what he wants. “Since the beginning of time.”Chloe moves in to kiss him, but Lucifer stops her. Chloe asks what is happening, and Lucifer replies that he seems to be saying no, as much in disbelief as Chloe. Chloe can’t believe it, and Lucifer is just as baffled “Usually I’d leap at the chance to fulfill my carnal desire, but for some reason I can’t”. Chloe is confused, and realises that she’s doing something that her mum would do. Lucifer puts his arm around her and tells her that kids don’t all turn into their parents, and starts going on about the relationship with his own Father. Chloe leans against him and starts to snore.
